TERENCE LUTHER

Terence Luther is a multi-disciplinary artist, who, after spending many successful years self-employed as a muralist and specialist painter and decorator, decided to fulfil his lifelong ambition of studying art at a higher level. He achieved his Foundation Degree (Arts) from the University of Hertfordshire in 2021 and was further awarded the Andy Lee Creative Enterprise Award from Hertford Regional College before completing his BA (Hons) in Fine Art at the University of Hertfordshire. He has exhibited in several group exhibitions, including the ‘20x20 Harlow Open’ in 2020, the Platform Graduate Exhibition in Waltham Cross Pavilion in 2021 and ‘Unpacked’ at Courtyard Arts in Hertford in 2022.

Within his practice the artist regularly uses found objects, saying that he waits for the objects to inform him how to reimagine them into new works of art. Central to his practice is his belief that working both spontaneously and instinctively allows uninhibited and unconstrained outcomes. Throughout Luther's work is a constant feeling of conflict and contrast, and his artworks have opposing textures, density, lightness, colour and shape.

Most recently his work has involved his acknowledgement of the connection of everything. His studies into fractals, Mycorrhizal networks, the spread of mold and the pathways of neurons have all influenced his work, where contrasting feelings of connection and disconnection are invoked.

Luther's dissertation dealt with his belief that democracy will be destroyed by the mass surveillance of society by large, controlling corporations and governments. He looked at how other contemporary artists are dealing with this modern dilemma.

This contemporary work is a nod to the ‘Panopticon’ proposed by philosopher Jeremy Bentham, whereby the masses were viewed and controlled by the unseen few. The stones represent society as fragmented yet whole; and he invites viewers to alter the artwork should they choose to.
