VITTORIA RICCITELLI

The natural world is the main source of inspiration running throughout Vittoria Riccitelli’s practice, both literal and not. Having previously created a series of paintings made with natural pigments from leaves, berries and soil, thus working literally and directly with nature, her current work focuses on a more personal aspect; viewing nature from an angle of not only admiration but also fear. The fear of the unknown.

Deep, dark, immense bodies of water, icebergs, the colossal pressures and never-ending vastness of this potent element initiated a series of works where Riccitelli explores this fear through painting, photography and film. As a multi-media artist, she wants to be able to explore and understand herself better through various mediums. ignoto, confusione reflects this fear of the unknown through a series of scenarios of melting ice, gradually increasing in speed. Tension is created through contrasts of slow and agitated movements, shifting between complete darkness and limited light sources. The sense of isolation and seclusion are ever-present in these compositions, using a small ice cube conveys the smallness and insignificance that one is compared to the vast, deep unknown. Taking something as grandiose as an iceberg or as the ocean and reducing it to an ice cube within these scenarios allows the artist to be obtain a sense of control to confront her fear. Water is a primary element; the unconscious and the ocean are linked, so this fear of the deep dark ocean is a subconscious fear. More is known about the surface of the moon than of the oceans, an unnerving thought for the artist.  These feelings are demonstrated in an ever-evolving methodology of work.
