SOPHIE SMITH

Sophie Smith has followed in her fathers footsteps to pursue a career in the arts, and received unconditional offers for each university that she applied for. Glad to have chosen the university of Hertfordshire for her degree, Sophie has found that her inspiration for creating has flourished with

the support of her tutors. Starting as a fine art painter, then delving into animation, Sophie has

found her love for video work in the third year of her time at university. The accompanying sound pieces are created by her own piano playing, flute playing, guitar and drums. Her love for creativity can be indulged within film work and it is for this reason why she has future plans to continue her

video editing journey.

Her dissertation focused on the self-healing properties that art can hold. In her practical work she examines social injustices and uses the process of making art to find an acceptance and expression of her inner emotional complexities. Just like artist and promoter of art therapy, Elizabeth "Grandma" Layton, Sophie Smith finds solace in drawing/sketching self-portraits that can help one to

examine themselves. As a multi-media artist she can find herself painting one day and editing images the next. However this does not prevent her from finding a self-expression through each form.

Aspiring to help others achieve a sense of self-healing through art, Sophie wants to create workshops and lessons for others to join. During the horrific events of 2022, from the War in Ukraine, Long-term covid complications and the

political injustice on human rights, Sophie has found a great deal of inspiration for creating, telling and expressive video works. Her films bring the viewer into a new reality, to question their own emotions and sense of self. With-out explaining to the audience what her work entails, she asks the viewer to conceive their own idea of what she is portraying. Allowing an abstraction of images to

create means for a way of thinking.
