AMBER MARSHALL
Amber Marshall, 22, is an aspiring artist from Broxbourne, Hertfordshire. Having progressed through a Foundation course in Art & Design, Amber decided to pursue her passion for Art by studying a Fine Art Degree at the University of Hertfordshire, for which she achieved a first-class degree. Amber runs her own Art business called, ‘Amber Marshall Art’ where she sells her own work and completes commissions for the public.
Amber has participated in many group exhibitions, including the Art & Design Foundation Final Exhibition in the David Gentleman Gallery at Hertford Regional College, Ware, in 2019; The Platform Graduate Exhibition at Waltham Cross Pavilion in 2021 and Unpacked at Courtyard Arts, Hertford, in 2022.
Amber is a multidisciplinary artist due to the versatile nature of her practice. She works mostly with painting but within this media context she explores sculpture, photography and printmaking. Amber bathes in the conversations between shape, colour, line, form and rhythm, as well as the instinctive physical movements made when painting. Exploring the relationship between these elements allows her to create undulating strokes and to use the brush not just as a tool, but as an extension of her body. Amber aims to preserve the intensity of each brushstroke, boiling it down to its essence. Her colour choices are broad and flow between being contrasting and complimentary to represent the energy in the moment. The artist’s work deals with dialectical tensions of obscure/distinct, point/line and one/many, refusing to collapse into one or the other, using repetition as a predominant theme in her practice. She uses painting as a tool for inability and ambiguity, showing painting is about being, always reminding herself that there is no right way to paint, so the more she does, the more she knows why.
Every painting has an underlying rhythm, much the same as a song or dance and this idea underpins Amber’s practice. Further inspiration comes from her background of playing squash and racketball. The energy she feels inside allows her to make flamboyant movements and strokes with her body, like the squash court being the ’canvas’ and the racket being the ‘paint brush’. The work reflects Amber’s everyday energy, drawing inspiration from shapes and colours in the everyday world.
